The Meaning of Diwali
The Origin & Mythology
Biological benefits, origins, and cultural significance.
The Ritual & Why
Cleaning and whitewashing homes is performed to clear 'stagnant energy' (Daridra) and invite 'active abundance' (Lakshmi). Oil lamps (diyas) are lit specifically at sunset during the darkest night of the year (Amavasya) to symbolize the ignition of the Atman (internal soul) over the darkness of ignorance, emphasizing that external light is a reminder of one's innate inner brilliance.
Science & Biological Context
Environmentally, the intense post-monsoon cleaning cycle eliminates insects and damp-borne bacteria that proliferate after the rains. Biologically, the shared communal activity and fire rituals trigger the release of oxytocin and dopamine, counteracting the onset of winter seasonal lethargy, while traditional sweets provide a calorie boost needed for the changing metabolic requirements of the cooling season.
Upcoming & Timing
The festival spans five days, peaking on the new moon night of the month of Kartika. In 2024, the main day falls on October 31st, and in 2025, it occurs on October 20th.
